A Plan for Biodiversity - 5th Grade GT Math
Why Plant Natives? - To start the Expressions and Equations unit, we first had an introduction to the importance of native plants in creating greater biodiversity.
Why Native? To reinforce the purpose behind planning a native garden, which this unit brought us, we did a bit more reading and illustrating to make sense of it all.
Eco Club - Since the first task involved calculating how many shirts at a certain rate could be purchased with different sums of money, we decided to design our own idea of a nice Eco Club T-shirt. So creative!
Let the Calculations and Planning Begin! - Using expressions and mathematical properties, we used what we had newly learned about factoring and the distributive property to start to plan a native garden.
MORE Calculating...
And Now for the REAL Plan - We had learned about the importance of layering and clustering when planning a garden for biodiversity. Using that knowledge, as well as the mathematical expressions we came up with , we were on our way to drawing a final blueprint.
VOILA! Here are a few of our beautiful masterpieces...
