5th Grade GT Math
Fifth grade G/T Math students engaged in Common Core Standards instruction all year. They were real troopers, working through meaningful and challenging mathematical tasks, learning real world content in order to extract and apply advanced mathematical concepts and skills. It has been a rigorous and rewarding mathematical year!
Concept Journals - To reinforce conceptual understanding of the skills and concepts involved in that standards the kids were learning, a Concept Journal was kept this year, in which multiple concepts were broken down and recorded in creative ways.
Unit Rate - To better understand the meaning behind finding a unit rate, students used grocery store flyers and broke down the prices of common items in order to compare per ounce, per pound, or per item. It was a real eye opener!
Which is the Better Buy? - After using grocery store flyers to compare rates, it was time to get the store for the real comparison. Which box of tissues is the better buy when taking price and quality into consideration?
Special Guest Speaker - Mrs. Hestnes, an electrical engineer with NASA, made a special visit to our GT Math class to impress upon the kids the importance of the field of engineering - as well as the necessity to collaborate with team members, as well as different teams, to get a job done.

Pi Day!!! - Pi Day is a special day in 5th Grade GT Math. We sat in a circle for the day, signaled with "Give me Pi," instead of "Give me five," and dissected an orange slice to conceptually understand the formula for area of a circle! Yummmmmm!
Our Resident Robotics Crew! - Several of our GT Math students chose to participate in the First Lego League Lego Robotics challenge. Since we had been tying our math instruction to rovers and space travel, it was a great connection to have the robotics students share their expertise.

Math Practice 3: Construct Viable Arguments & Critique Others - This school year, a main goal for these students was to engage in the Math Practices, and even more specifically, Math Practice 3. Students who can justify their reasoning and analyze someone else's methods as well, have deeper problem-solving capabilities and knowledge.
Sharing more problem-solving strategies while solving problems related to the Space Shuttle and the Space X's Dragon.
Another Special Guest! - Mr. Henry, an engineer from APL presented the idea of what a robot really is. It was very cool to see the various robots he brought up in his presentation.
Mr. Stick Talks! (And so does Mrs. Stick!) - Writing in math is just as important as talking math. Mr. Stick has been a great vehicle for getting our students writing about math concepts for a deeper understanding. Check our some of what Mr. Stick has to say:
