Logic & Reasoning - 3rd Grade Math C.E.U.
This unit was taught over the course of the entire school year. Mrs. Young visited Mrs. Groman's math class every Monday to supplement problem-solving instruction using various logic concepts.
Sets & Subsets - Students brought objects from home and grouped them as sets and subsets. They swapped their items in order to define each others' sets and subsets.
Two Ring Venn - The next method we would use for organizing and making sense of information would be the Two-Ring Venn Diagram. Before getting it done in the classroom with pencil and paper, we thought it might be fun to use hula hoops and sidewalk chalk!
Many Types of Numbers - Using the Sieve of Erantosthenes, we learned about prime and composite numbers. We used those numbers, as well as factors, multiples and other number attributes to make up our own venn diagrams.
Moving on to THREE! - Once comfortable with the Venn Diagram, we added another component - a third ring! We worked in small groups to come up with a three-ring Venn based on numbers and their traits.
Interpreting Remainders - By analyzing problems involving division, and using symbols, we were able to deduce which symbol represented which problem when it came to the role the remainder plays in each of the problems' answers. Students matched cards with problems to define the importance of the remainder.
